Firstly, Agneeveer needs some tweaking. Well-trained soldiers should be considered for police service or other wings. Secondly, the British preferred Marathas, Rajputs, Sikhs/Jats/Punjabis, and Gurkhas because of their belief in the nonsensical "MARTIAL RACE THEORY". Maybe, It's time India reconsiders this British-era thinking and divisions. Ukrainian Farmers are raining hell on Martial Ruskis.

Actually, the British genuinely believed in the ridiculous MARTIAL RACE THEORY. Lord Roberts was its architect. It was not just incorporating vanquished forces. They genuinely considered tall, fair, blue-eyed individuals to make better soldiers (not just as warriors but also discipline-wise). Hence, Pathans, Rajputs, Sikhs, Gurkhas and Marathas were their preferred stock. The Indian army was reformed in 1956, but British elements remained. Even in the current scenario, the North has more representation in the army. That said, one needs to understand that the rest of India has had better economic opportunities in other fields, and the army is not the sole benchmark of patriotism.

@IndianArma Actually, they are very different. You have rightly pointed out the history, but there are some finer points. Ukraine was never a country. Hitler and Stalin divided Polish territory among themselves. This east Polish territory (which now forms western Ukraine) was fused with the eastern Russian territory to create Ukraine (There is a long version of how this happened, but this is the gist. It was a blunder by the then Communist regime). West Ukraine was always culturally different. West is Christian and agricultural, while the East is Russian Orthodox and industrial). It is Western Ukraine that is hyper-national and contributing most to the war. They are not even Slavs.

Not necessarily China. Nepalese concerns seem legitimate. It's politically very fragile, and their unemployment problems are true. Most of their intellectual population is migrating outwards every year. These highly trained soldiers could become LIVE DYNAMITE.

@IndianArma Hold your horses. My reply was specifically in relation to Ukraine as it was specifically cited as an example by you. As for Martial "race" theory. The word in quotes is the problem. Marathas are not even cast. It's a creed. Shivaji united several castes to form Marathas. Sikhs took up arms at the insistence of Guru Hargobind whose father was killed by Jahangir. Later under Ranjit Singh, Sikh Empire expanded and he got French generals to train his soldiers in Modern warfare. Only Rajputs have a continuous martial tradition but others have taken up other roles. I agree about practice making one perfect. Hence, an army background or role model is likely to make these communities more inclined to continue the tradition. But history is witness to the fact, that warriors have risen from all stratas. Wielding sword is not domain of select "races"

@IndianArma My example Ukrainian farmer was to demonstrate that there are no "martial" or superior races when it comes to warfare. I still stick to that assessment. As to Sherpas being better mountaineers, that's evolution. You don't even need to go that far. Chhatrapati Shivaji, who is considered the father of the Indian Navy, recruited Bhandaris into his Navy purely because of their seafaring skills. My debate is over the British proposed "Martial race theory". Given the number of your replies, you understand well enough that societies have certain environmental advantages which make them unique. In fact, even insurgents rely on their environmental knowledge to wreak havoc on our paramilitary and police forces. Does that make them some sort of a martial race? Finally, the Gurkhas. I have nothing against them or the army recruitment policy. If it ain't broke why fix it? But I get the Nepalese and Indian Govt predicament. If their Govt is not allowing recruitment, what can India do? Maybe try getting more recruits from Indian Gurkhas or explore other alternatives for recruiting (against the current prevailing thinking)
