The tactical mistakes made by the Ruskis have been appalling. However, the essential difference between the Armenian and Ukrainian fightback has been the degree of western support and logistics. Russian supply lines were spread too thin while the Ukrainian-Polish border was open. Russians made the same mistake in Afghanistan. Russia's "Nuclear card" failed miserably. We should make a note of that as both our adversaries are Nuclear powers. The MAD threat may not hold in testing times.

@craigkdillon I think they underestimated Ukraine. Perhaps, you could call it stupidity. More than tactics arrogance led them astray. Even now the continuance seems to be ego-driven. However, i think something must be cooking in Moscow. Perhaps, they are building repositories to rain them down in the December phase of the war.

@craigkdillon Yes. You could be right. However, General Mark Milley himself has ruled out an outright Ukrainian victory. It's a seesaw battle. Every moment counts. You are right about sanctions hampering Russian procurement but given enough time everything can be arranged. Russians are buying time. They will try to cripple Ukraine. A political solution is the only way out of this war.

@craigkdillon Let's see how things unfold. However, I am not buying into this whole Putin being deposed or Russia's outright surrender conspiracies. Firstly, a Putin-less Russia will be headache of its own. Russia has too many separatists groups and several historical (mostly Pre-World war 2) conflicts within Eastern Europe and Central Asia will resurface. Nobody wants that uncertainty around a Nuclear power. That brings me to to the second points - Nukes. A cornered Russia will inevitably use the Nukes. If Putin thinks he's losing, he'll go Nuclear. The consequences would be deadly for Europe and Russia but push comes to shove, he won't care.
