Police reforms essential to curb this mess. There is a need for a civilian oversight committee that fixes accountability and acts in the interest of democracy.

@Lucas-ix8bg Ministry can exist and Home minister is necessary for the effective deployment of police force against crimes. However, the police and the ministry itself must be made answerable to the public.

@Lucas-ix8bg That is why I recommend a Civilian oversight committee. They have it in the west and for the most part, they are effective. I won't get into the Black lives matter issue or the fact that anything in India can be bent to a politician's will but I am all for a system that is an upgrade over the current system. It won't weed out 100% of corruption and police brutality but it would be a good start even if it shows 10% improvement. What you recommend is already there. Everyone in India is answerable to the judiciary but the process is painfully slow. A PIL takes time to get listed and even if it somehow manages to get hearing it either get torn apart or gets caught up in a process that takes years. There is also the case where an accused police officer can decline sermons. Unless the court berates the accused or threaten with contempt of court nobody responds.

@jayantjolly You are wrong and right. The executive that includes and police and govt officers is indeed a politician's real power and taking that power away will be cruel and quite frankly useless. After a politician is supposed to serve people. How can he/she serve without power? That is why nobody is demanding to take away the power. It is all about fixing accountability.

@jayantjolly We may have to move to a different planet to find your "honest" politician. In politics, everyone is the same. Polarization and religion have been a part of politics since the birth of the republic. Also, it isn't endemic to India alone. Identity has been a part of politics since Roman times. Its merits are a part of a separate debate. Accountability is a human thing and yes everyone can be bent but let the process play out in public. Let people see who is defending whom and make their electoral choices.

@jayantjolly Don't ever apologise for expressing your opinion. Your rant was very educational. I do not agree with many of your points but I respect your opinion. Education and intellect are not the same things. Also, Education does not lead to the development of etiquette. I've seen how Indians behave in Europe and how they behave back home. I think society makes a big difference. Nonetheless, India's political class is not the problem. It is the lack of accountability. Everything from Oxygen shortage to dynastic succession to corruption and scams to self-congratulatory advertisements to post-poll violence which we are witnessing today tells us only one thing - IS HAMAM MEIN SAB NANGE HAIN.
