Bhakts, Pidis, Commies, and Liberandus - India will only tear itself up in these groups and achieve nothing. The pandemic is a mirror. It has shown us our weaknesses and limitations and exposed the very sorry reality of India which none of us like to admit. Ordinary Indians expect the PM to go bold and brave on reforms. Farm reforms are in a positive direction. The PM should not buckle under pressure from some uninformed citizens who would prefer the status quo over progress.

Lies and manipulations. There is NO PROVISION TO ELIMINATE THE MANDI SYSTEM IN ANY OF THE FARM BILLS. In fact, Farmers now have a wider market. Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD THE GOVT ROLLBACK ON THESE VERY VERY IMPORTANT REFORMS. To placate farmers, Govt can introduce another bill that explicitly states that the MANDI SYSTEM WILL CONTINUE and introduce a TRIBUNAL FOR FARM DISPUTES. under these reforms.

@arshgill5714 That was not intended toward any particular group rather an entire lot of "uninformed" citizens. Not all farmers are protesting and not all opposing are farmers. Some political actors are actively involved. The word "Uninformed" means a lack of awareness of facts which is an apt description of these people. It is not a matter of opinion. People also opposed Liberalization yet the benefits turned out to be real. People have the right to oppose but not the right to disrupt or block entry to India's capital. Govt should stand its ground.

@rajdeepsinghvirk6678 First of all the whole concept of Mandi is to prevent farmers from operating in free markets. If farmers from UP and Bihar are doing so it would be illegal. Unlike Farmers from Punjab and Haryana, farmers from UP and Bihar often hold smaller landholdings (at times 5 acres or less). The large farmers from these States do the necessary "Jugaad" but the small farmers have no choice but become a plaything in the hands of middlemen and traders. There is already an overproduction of wheat and paddy in India, therefore, ideally in a free market with high supply and the same demand the price should be low which is why they might be illegally selling in Punjab and Haryana for those higher MSPs. Right now the problem with these farmers is that they do not have any other alternatives and continue producing unprofitable wheat/paddy. The beauty of the free market is that IT IS CONSTANTLY ON THE HUNT FOR OPPORTUNITIES. Corporates will sense this opportunity and work out a mutually beneficial agreement with farmers to switch to say Potatoes or other beneficial crops which could fetch both of them higher rates. Uncertainty is the enemy of farmers. Once they know they have a buyer at the end of the crop cycle, they can happily go about their business. This is the reason why American farmers are so successful. There is absolutely no doubt that the MSP system in the country is rigged and designed to not benefit the farmers and makes Govt, the Big Boss of Farmers.

Rohit Mahajan These reforms are good and certainly an improvement over the existing system where Mandi's loot farmers by rigging prices through their monopolies. These entitled brats have never seen the system yet are always the first to oppose. Just come and see for yourself in Maharashtra. Onion farmers fetch better rates for their production by selling it on highways than going to Mandis. These reforms are not ultimate and nothing is perfect. As and when shortcomings are encountered the laws must be amended to do away with those shortcomings rather than opposing just for political gains. I support farm reforms because I have seen MSP becoming the MAXIMUM price instead of the intended MINIMUM SUPPORT PRICE. The situation in Maharashtra and Karnataka at least makes a strong case for these reforms. Had even Congress introduced exactly the same reforms I would have still supported them.

@arshgill5714 Some part of your argument is correct but prejudice against corporates is not right. Farmers will have the option of doing business with multiple corporates and competition will ensure they get their due. Govt must proactively act as a watchdog to ensure that nobody is gaming the market. Free markets keeps Govt intervention to a minimum and makes customer the king. As to standing committees, in US they work. In India they delay.

@arshgill5714 First of all nobody is abolishing the mandi system. The mandi system is NOT BEING REPLACED. This is exactly the misunderstanding that it is being propagated. MSP and Mandi system is NOT GOING ANYWHERE. Nobody is holding a gun to a farmer's head and forcing him to sell to Corporates. Farmers can choose to sell to whoever they like and fetch the price. To do away with the confusion, it would be wise if the Govt brings about a Constitutional guarantee to the existence of a Mandi. Of course, once these reforms succeed and create a robust market, these Mandis will eventually become obsolete and can be done away with for good, but for now, Govt must guarantee the existence of these inefficient Mandis. As to guaranteeing MSP -That's not possible. MSP or all prices for that matter are determined by dynamic factors and No Govt can pre-determine MSPs or provide ridiculous assurances. Such practices can break the market and are unfair to the consumer.

@shobhamurthy People who commit dishonesty often find peace in accusing others of dishonesty. You are clearly a propagandist that is why you are accusing others of the same. You keep mouthing whoever lines you like to mouth but I can think for myself.

@psvirk395 First of all not all farmers are opposing. Secondly over just demands they may protest anyway they like but here stupidity is in play. Those who despise contract farming can very well refrain from it and those who want to continue selling their produce to Mandis can continue doing so. No govt can guarantee a specific amount as MSP. It has to be determined as per the conditions that year. Some of the demands are just ridiculous. Anyways the BJP also shares the blame of this mess. They beat the drum of doubling incomes and made a festival of MSP. Now it has manifested into a monster.
