The prologue of this article might not be entirely correct (Yogendra Yadav was there to settle a political score with the Modi Govt), but the recommendations made at the end carry significant weight. Congress, SAD, and AAP have skin in the game and will never undertake the very, very necessary, politically inconvenient steps. Only the BJP can get the state out of the hole that Punjab has been digging for itself since 2000. Ironically, the conservative Sikh elements may hold the key to the solution. The missionaries of Punjabi have already turned the Jat Sikhs into some sort of villains.

I feel this article should have also talked about Punjab's real problems. The Sikhs are angry. Their identity is being challenged by missionaries, drug rackets, and migration. The conservative element is fast losing control and is barely holding onto scraps now. The sad demise of SAD itself tells you the story. But, NONE of these issues are of BJP's making. A BJP intervention could only make matters worse. It will have to happen organically. It needs to resurrect the old alliances and reach out to Gurdwara heads.

@harjeetful Nobody owns water. Punjab was warned about its declining water table as early as the 90s. Punjab was never a wheat and rice state. It was artificially made in the 60s. Punjab had 30 years to shift away from these water-intensive crops, yet Punjab Govt did NOTHING. IGNORE these facts and continue living in denial. Punjab is no longer the sole breadbasket of India.

@harjeetful It's not a law, and there is nothing international about them. It's a principle of water allocation. Stop beating around the bush. SYL is not even a current problem. Nothing has been finalized over it yet. The matter will be decided by the courts. There is no arguing over something that is sub judice. Many of Punjab's regions are expected to go dry post-2029. This has nothing to do with rivers. Also, FYI, none of Punjab's 5 rivers originate in Punjab.

@harjeetful Because somebody is mining it. Also, you might not know this:- water is not free. Supplying water costs money. Nothing in life comes for free. Punjab's subsidies and farmer welfare account for nearly 16-20% of its budget.
