  1. The law (however imperfect one may deem it) has been violated. This becomes a CRIMINAL OFFENSE. Maybe, if the woman had manipulated and misled the man regarding her age, one could have been considerate. However, as the law stands - It is still a crime.

  2. I think this needs a lot more deliberation than what's presented here. Feminism and patriarchy are still very elitist topics for Indian society. I think just one cherry picked case does NOT give the whole picture. Shekhar himself reveals in the video about the witnesses turning hostile. POCSO is an important act. Many things hinge on it. If the age for marriage remains at 18 and consent is reduced to 16, what could be the larger societal implications? Japan and the west are a very different society.

  4. We are a prude society. I don't have an opinion over the "age of consent" but I think the definitions of purity and sanctity in our country are still archaic. J Saideepak was specific to Casteism, but the part of the Hindu Right that admires child marriage and women subjugation is the same as Taliban or Marxist/Communists. Victim shaming and shunning continue to be a major social problem in our country.

  5.  @elcapitaan1  See, friend, once the criminal offense is established the sentencing is up to the judge. Based on the stipulations in the law, the judge can decide the quantum of punishment. Perhaps, the person's legal counsel was incompetent, or maybe the judge was harsh, but the law is the law. It is also what I think of the Rahul Gandhi defamation case. It's ridiculous to cry that one was harshly sentenced. What should be an adequate punishment is a matter of perception. Everyone will have their own view on the matter. The main question is if the law was applied correctly and given the info that does not seem to be in any dispute.
