I think it is a choice between 1)Modi vs X and 2) Modi vs ?. A prepoll alliance with X as a candidate seems like an exciting contest because Modi's performance becomes the central question. However, it will also put the onus on X's merits and credentials. Someone like Naveen Patnaik or Nitish Kumar could be a better X than say Mamata. The second scenario is actually the more optimal one because the opposition building consensus on X is unlikely. IT ALL DEPENDS ON COVID AND THE NEXT TWO YEARS.

Not really. While there may be too many variables, the ones that carry any significant weight are few. Caste and religion are often exaggerated variables in India. The caste-based voting has come down heavily in the last few decades. In fact, today it is mainly the Opposition like say RJD and SP that drive it on account of their own affiliation to a particular caste. As to religious polarization, it is a full toss that Congress gives to the BJP and they ace it to perfection. Diggi's recent comments were a demonstration of that. I think more than vaccines employment will take precedence over anything else in 2024. BJP needs to herculean growth to justify a third term for itself. It is BJP's election to lose. Faces won't matter.

I think 2024 is BJP's election to lose. BJP will need to justify a third for itself and for that GDP will take precedence over everything else. They don't have much time. It won't matter if the OPPOSITION HAS NO FACE OR how many full tosses idiots like Digvijay Singh bowls at them the asking run rate for the BJP is climbing. Unemployed people will vote out any Govt out of power.
