I think they are taking a leaf out of the 2004 playbook. Back then, Vajpayee's BJP was looking invincible, and Sonia Gandhi had acceptance lower than Rahul but the results of the year were a shocker even to INC. However, much water has flown through the Ganges since 2004. BJP commands a higher loyal vote bank than INC and it has a bigger pan India presence. Also, As long as Rahul remains INC's principal face, it will be an advantage for Narendra Modi.
