I don't think the BJP is in any self denial. In fact, Modi seems to be hurt and has taken the loss very personally. Nevertheless, they need to keep their chin up else it would explode like UPA 2. I think that's why BJP is trying to act as though it is business as usual. Also, another reason is that its assembly prospects are not great this year. Haryana is a goner while Maha would be hard to retain.

An NDTV Report on the matter has attributed the UP loss to disappointment among youth and old due to 1) Agniveer 2) Contractual worker hiring only and no permanent posts 3) Frequent paper leaks and 4) Opposition narrative on Reservation.
