Not Singapore. Israel is an example of educated minds building a nation. "Rational progressive mind" is subjective. Singapore started like us (perhaps, even worse than India). Singapore's key asset was its location. It never had an educated class. In fact, in the year 1965 when 50% of its population was illiterate, and 30% was living in slums. LKY led the economic miracle by fully embracing capitalism and leveraging its location. He laid out a red carpet for HP, TI, and other MNCs. By the 80s, Singapore had become a high-tech country. It was through an easy migration policy and some highly skilled labor. LKY was notoriously authoritarian, and his Govt was also corrupt, but he delivered. Singapore/Korea started with basic primary/secondary and are now pursuing higher-order education. India has always been okay on the education front. It did not result in a Singapore because until the 90s we were chasing the unicorn of SOCIALISM. We wasted our prime years.

The West has the habit of talking about Africa with great "pity" (White men's burden, of course). Even some Indians think of Africa as some basket case. It's not pity, It's condescending. There are some genuine problems in Africa, like every other continent. The borders of many African countries are neatly drawn straight lines. It's a colonial legacy. Africa's history, culture, and very soul were DESTROYED by white colonizers. Nationalism is new for many African countries. These countries need the Military to manage ethnic/tribal conflicts. Military staging coups have many factors built into them, and some are even legitimate.

@mg.f.9023 Dude, this is a bizarre statement. I know we have different views on politics (where differences are welcome and okay), but to suggest that "Indians don't work hard in India" is malarkey. India is a very hardworking nation. I mostly blame our bureaucracy for our problems. I don't think our politicians (from all ideologies) ever had any bad intentions. The "babu" system is more about control, even when it's not a black hole of corruption. Recently there was a World Bank report stating that it takes 138 hours and 55 signatures to move 1 truck from India to Bangladesh. That sums things up. Even before, Narayan Murty has been on record telling how difficult it was for him to buy computers during the 80s and 90s. It used to take heavy lobbying in Delhi and was a waste of precious time. There was also the Bombay Club headed by Bajaj and others who were dead against entry of foreign companies. My teacher used to say that it takes a lot to keep a country like India so much behind. The "Babus" don't get enough credit.
