The "M" in MSP stands for MINIMUM. It was brought in the 70s to encourage farmers to produce. It worked during the era of under-production. The current era requires SUPPLY to match DEMAND. Govt intervention CANNOT, but COPRPORATIZATION of farming can achieve it.

@BharatThatIsIndia Because Govt has many restrictions in place for private players engaging with farmers (irrespective of what they grow). Also, I should make a correction "Private players" are present, but Agro companies and big chains are missing or inadequate. Middlemen take advantage of the system's inadequacies.

@BharatThatIsIndia There are multiple restrictions - some legal and many more that come as a consequence of Govt intervention. Setting up a Cold storage is expensive. Nobody would commit money to infrastructure building unless one is assured of returns. Whenever prices rise Govt bans exports making Indian agro companies unreliable internationally. Then there is a strong middlemen lobby. The sugar lobby is a prime example. In Maha, it is controlled by politicians who do not allow anyone else to step in. Then there is also the farmer lobby (more precisely the rich farmer lobby) who beat around the bush, holds the Govt hostage and artificially distort prices. Haryana recently saw sunflower farmers bullying the Govt into changing sunflower seeds MSP. All this creates supply uncertainty making it financially infeasible for CorporatiZATION of agriculture.

@BharatThatIsIndia Didn't bother to read your reply but got the gist that you are going through "fits" by its mere mention. So let's hope BJP goes through with UCC. Protests over UCC will be the last thing anybody will care for in India.
