  1. FYI, the Hindi heartland's caste complexity pales in front of Ktk, TN, Maha, and AP with AP being the most interesting where the numerically most powerful Kapus do not wield political power. Also, one should be wary of extrapolating assembly results to national politics. We have presidential-style parliamentary elections now.

  2. I'm not sure about the "vs" implication in your statement. BJP has been trying hard to capture the Vokkaliga territory. Even the INC strategy has been similar, i.e., focusing on a Vokkaliga+Lingayat consolidation. In fact, I fear the extensive focus on these two castes may actually backfire. BJP's candidate list will be interesting.
