"43% of the ticket price is borne by the taxpayer" sums up the plight of Railways. Even if one were to treat this as a welfare necessity, we are all witnesses to the menace of TICKETLESS TRAVEL. The entire business model NEEDS a REVAMP.

LIVES are CHEAP in India. You cannot compare China and India. In our case, the QUADRUPLING of tracks is a DISTANT DREAM. Land acquisition is impossible (as we have too many people free for protests). Forget new land. Railways cannot free their own land from encroachers because "Honorable" courts side with them. No doubt, the Railways are under HEAVY STRAIN. On a positive note, Odisha is a poor state with rich hearts. Kudos to the Odia folks. Perhaps, big cities could learn from Odisha.
