Nature is filled with tipping points which are unpredictable to some degree. It's the point of collapse. Set a book on end and slowly push it so that it tips. You can do this for some time until the tipping point is reached and the book suddenly falls over . Too much Snow on a roof- same thing. It will suddenly collapse.
