  1. To americans, you ask them what freedom is and they'll automatically mostly say, freedom of speech and freedom to congregate/protest. To China, and probably most of the developing nations, freedom is to have a home, family, and a job that can comfortably support them...and freedom of a safe environment. Freedom of speech is a perk, a "good to have", not necessarily a need. The two groups basically have different priorities.

  2. China sees an average of about 500 every day, protests from several individuals to thousands in numbers -- a number that has likely since increased. The villagers common complaints are local officials being corrupt, inept or abusing power. The central goverment actually encourages these and even have "hotlines" for people to complain to.
