John McCord How does a mid sized country that exports 48% into the largest trading bloc in the world exactly intend to play hardball? The EU won a trade war against the US before and the EU has taken down all kind of multinationals for not abiding to the rules and fined them. The EU treats the UK just like any other third country.

@wakey87 I thought countries like India fought to become independent and thousands of Indians were put in prison. A certain Gandhi and a few million Indians wanted to be free from oppression.

@ollienoble9683 France, Italy, Germany and the UK contribute more then 10% each to the EU budget. The UK contributes about half of what Germany does. So the UK is not the largest but one of four larger and Germany contributes most.

@therrawbuzzin9517 That demand of May was against the EU basic rules and unacceptable. It is embarrassing that after 40 years the UK pretends not to know the basics of the EU, part of which has been written by the UK.

Mange2 What exactly has the UK given and whom? The UK is leaving the EU and leaving is about losing. As a third country a variation of options are at hand which all were ignored as the UK wrapped itself in red lines and entangled itself. This is all the product of UK choices.
3
MC DANIEL DILL - The demand of May is violating basic EU standards while the UK wants to have their cake their cake and eat it. Sure some Tories and others demand even more and better cake so that this demand can not even pass Parliament.
3
@psikogeek May's demand was having our cake and eat it with blue, red and white topping.
3
@simmo1024 it is a EU outer border and so it is a EU issue. Not to mention the international acknowledged good Friday agreement the has to be uphold. May be someone should have thought about the consequences of Brexit.
3
@romevo100 Everyone in the WTO has trade arrangements and treaties, many are in blocs, only Mauretania and the UK will trade on WTO only.
3
@squizza28 Really where from? What are the costs? How much longer does it take? Reality is the UK will still buy from the EU.
2
0 0 You are aware that the EU is with 48% its main export market. So if your main export market would be in bad shape they would buy less UK goids and that means in the UK jobs would be lost. 3 million UK jobs depend on trade with the EU.
2
@renegade2853 I would have agreed with you before the UK voted to destroy parts of their economy and voted to be poorer, lose jobs, lose tax income and lose credibility. So I am not sure other countries would not hurt themselves for vague terms and empty words.
2
Ste c The UK loses jobs, tax revenue and credibility. The EU is a huge market of 450 million and an internal trade of 4400 billion and an export of 1800 billion in countries all over the world. The UK is a nice to have trading partner, but rather insignificant.
2
"Having our cake and eat it."
2
@donalddonaldson9814 Really? So what will the EU backtrack? Do you really think the violate their own treaties and rules to please some third country that is unreliable and tells every day a different story?
2
@ParticleJesus The legend of the true Brexiteer to whom the EU will bow down and say " whatever you demand we are your faithful servants." Well this is a fantasy as the EU would have the same position and the UK still leaving.
2
@fromthesilence9583 The UK is leaving and burns the equivalence of 750 treaties. Leaving is about losing. So the UK can make an offer and see if it is good enough for the EU.
2
@stephen crowther The EU is an organisation of sovereign states. The head of states are all democratically elected and together they come to agreements for their countries.
2
Kev You mean all these countries the EU trades with for 1800 billion a year?
2
Robert Marsh - I am sure when JRM comes with ERG's ballistic missile shield and the British expeditionary force the EU will hand them the key to all cities. When Johnson rolls in with his tanks they will already have surrendered. (This was irony, we had a time before B..)
1
Caribstu The EU is reliable, speaks with one voice, formulated a plan and sticks to it, decided to prep a negotiator and put it in his hands. I see professionalism, experience and class. This was not what I expected.
1
@simmo1024 Really why? The UK is leaving and burns the equivalence of 750 treaties. So the UK is a third country like Canada and can have a Canada style trade treaty.
1
Brexit Monger 48% of the UK exports is to the EU27 and 16% through EU trade treaties. This means 64% of EU exports depends on the EU.
1
@Comic Book Guy The UK exports 48% into the EU and 16% through EU trade treaties. So the UK depends for 64% of its exports on EU membership. For imports: 60% of the parts of most cars assembled in the UK come from the EU27 as in time cross border frictionless trade. The UK depends on EU imports and exports in many ways and leaving is about losing jobs, tax revenue and credibility.
1
@karstentopp The first lesson of a third country is you are waiting in a row and are a rule taker. This only does not apply for trade giants which the UK is not.
