  2. Brian Pelle ; Combustible wood suitable for fireplaces is not a very big part of the fuel loads that bushfires burn. There is a laymans readable document from the Vic CFA that talks about the various fuel loads and the difficulties of management. Worth a search. Cheers. [EDIT] I agree there should be better access via permits to collect wood, both private and business.

  3.  @brianpelle7461  ; The CFA document is not layman's crap. It's a combination of science backed up by experience. One of the authors is on our crew and he does know what he's doing not only from experience (layman's crap as you call it) but also science he learnt while getting his doctorate. Most problems arise when they have blokes who've never stepped outside the lab telling firies/farmers what works. Look up Mr White (a farmer) and what he went through in Nugent in Tassie. He eventually won in court but he should not have been there as the scientists were blatantly wrong.

  6.  @brianpelle7461  ; BTW, I'd encourage you to read it all. I enjoyed it and got a lot out of it and not just because I'm a farmer and firie. It is a long read with a lot of technical detail, some of which I admit went over my head but if you read it all, you'll have a good picture of how complex the problem is and understand why there is nothing that can replace the natural cycle of burning. All we can do is to have some small amount of control over when and where by burning off. The firewood collecting does not help, you'll understand why after you've read it. However there is also absolutely no reason to not allow it as the document explains. There are points about the collectors, like other bush users who do help the bush in many unusual and unexpected ways.
