@donhuang9855 Nah it made sense when there were relatively few members in the EU but we should have transferred away from such a system as the EU grew. Once the EU grew over ten members all unanimity clauses should have been changed to 2/3rds majority ones or even 3/4th majority ones.

Yeah but we don't really have a Washington who can more or less coup them out of existence.

@donhuang9855 Actually what the EU uses for most part is "1/3rd or 1/3rd veto", that is "If 1/3rd of the member countries are against something it's vetoed, or, if member countries representing 1/3rd of the population of the EU is against something it is vetoed." We should just move the remaining unanimity clauses to this system.

I don't think we were oblivious to that this would happen, the rule of law clause was really an invitation to someone else vetoing the spending so the frugal four doesn't have to look like assholes.

We've done what we can. If Poland insists on turning the EU parliament to a rerun of the Sejm of the Polish-Lithian commonwealth then poland is going to end up getting the boot from the EU.
1
I think your media got it right.
1
They're the ones who end up suffering. It's the poor countries of the EU who will suffer the most if this doesn't get through.
1
How we got where we are today? We stupidly invited Poland and Hungary into the union.
1
@qzg7857 The EU already have safeguards against that, and in fact it seems likely Merkel intends to pass defacto leadership of the EU not to her successor but to Macron. Poland and Hungary are paralyzing the EU like the nobles of the polish Lithuanian commonwealth once paralyzed the sejm. And unfortunately with a high probability of the same effect.

@andylatka6488 Every country has values. Hungary and Poland seems to be reverting to pre enlightenment values though.
1
@andylatka6488 Asking them to respect modern notions of human rights is not being a dictator.

@newfieldcharlotte324 Ah but when the UK quit the EU the budget was lowered by their contribution and there was no provision for if being increased back up, we (the frugal 4) agreed to it being increased back up, us making up for the money lost by the departure of the UK, but only of these rule of law provisions were added. So yes you can block this, but remember we can at any time walk away and you are entitled to the money of only the countries who remain in the union. Which will at that point be no one with any money to give. It's really what we should do the 24 other countries should all leave the EU and instantly form a new one leaving Poland and Hungary as the only member of their own little club where they can jack each other off for all eternity.
1
@bLd321 Rest of Europe wants it, if Poland leaves we can sanction Hungary and then boot them out.
1
@newfieldcharlotte324 It's our tax money that is the money the EU sends.
1
@bLd321 You wanted to increase the budget which we agreed to under certain provisions. Now you are backpedalling on those conditions so why should we feel obligated to pay in that money if you don't uphold you commitments?
1
@newfieldcharlotte324 When our budget commitments were increased we did so under the provision that this would happen, if it doesn't why shouldn't we take out money and leave, we have no interest in paying to help Poland throw women in jail for trying to get an abortion.
1
@viragbacsi6556 Hungary formally renounced all claims to lands outside it's current borders when it joined the EU, every country does that, it's part of the joining process. Even stating a claim to land outside your current borders is a violation of the EU treaties.
1
@newfieldcharlotte324 Sorry I don't respond to gish gallops write briefly or not at all.
1
One authoritarian regime looks like the next one to me.
1
@goncaloferreira8543 Not entirely, Turkey has some semblance of free press after all, they may not be quite as authoritarian as Hungary.
1
At this point who can tell the diffrence?
1
@timogul Because when the EU was formed the idea was that it would be used if Germany started backpedalling.
1
@youtubebitzzness2308 We could form separate bilateral treaties outside the EU. That way Poland and Hungary couldn't do squat.
1
@againitsme378 Oh the frugal four knew, this way the spending gets blocked and they don't have to be the ones looking bad by blocking it.
