  1. When disc brakes first became mainstream they were on the front wheels only on many cars - too expensive to put front and rear. The disc/drum combo worked for the reasons you give. My 1970 Ford LTD braked nicely for the size car it was. Bought it used as my first car, kept it a long time - and was glad the cost of brake replacement was kept ~low that way.
