All very true. Also, the company making megacasting machines can only produce a limited amount in a limited time. I think the reason Sandy is so disappointed is he was so impressed with the Model Y, and how overall Tesla iterates "at the speed of thought." His hopes were high for Model 3.

I want to see Sandy go over Starship prototypes SN5 through SN11 and comment on the improvement in the weld quality and production. Bonus: no need to do a tear-down, SN12 was just disassembled and is in plain view.

That makes sense, why disrupt the production output piecemeal when you can soon do it all at once. Well, relatively soon.

Yes, he had such high hopes for Model 3 after the Model Y that he didn't step back and look at Tesla's overall production needs.

Megacastings = Megaprofits

5:00 Elon Musk is a loud critic of the sunk cost fallacy. But Tesla was making huge push to hit the target of 500,000 cars in 2020. This was about their continued ability to attract investors, about future growth. There was a cost - apparently they couldn't halt production to switch megacastings into the assembly line. They waited to the last week of the year to shut down the lines for Model X and S for a refresh, which is much overdue. Perhaps they got first dibs on new megacastings.

Was Sandy being deliberately ironic when he said "It does not take a rocket scientist to ask the question, Why Isn't that just one part", or is it ironic he just used an old expression? Elon has been very busy this year building a radical new rocket, the SpaceX Starship, pushing iterations "at the speed of thought" as Sandy likes to say. Also overseeing SpaceX launch the first two crewed flights on American spacecraft in about a decade. Sandy, you've done a lot of coverage of the new 4160 batteries. Pushing that pilot production line was a priority over other production lines. Also pushing building 2 Gigafactories and completing a 3rd. He's not supervising the concrete contractors, but a lot of strategic planning and strategic relationships with governments needed attention. All of the above are about increased production and quality for all the years to come. It's not surprising the Model 3 production had low priority. Yes, I know Elon isn't the only person doing things at Tesla, but things happen when he shows up in person. I'll bet he made a deliberate decision to leave the Fremont Model 3 production line alone.

Yup, and the company building them (in Italy?) is probably at the best speed it can manage. And the priority on the ones they turn out is Texas and Berlin. The factories aren't finished, but that's the point - these machines are so big and heavy it's a lot easier to install them and then finish the walls and roof around them.
