Thank you for laying out the parts cost savings in detail. And due to my education by Sandy I understand the importance of eliminating production steps, and thus costs. But I still have large reservations about relying on a purely vision based system - I want technology that can see better than vision.

@terrysullivan1992 I know this is true, but I've also seen Elon get doctrinaire or even fixated on the "best part is no part" approach.

I worry about how dirty bumper mounted cameras will become. Slushy grime after a snowstorm and just grime after a light rain. Would I have to wipe them off twice a day? They would be a lot lower than the ~mid-high mounted cameras on many SUVs, and those get dirty somewhat easily in those conditions.

In Michigan you should be worrying about the grime accumulating from old snow and road sanding and rain. I experience that problem in upstate NY with just a back-up camera. Easily wiped off, but in bad conditions that needs to be done every time you start driving. Doing that for every camera must be a real PIA. Idk if radar could detect the road shoulder through drifting snow, but if it could eliminating it is a bad idea. I sometimes drive on small country roads with ill defined edges to the pavement. Being as good as excellent human vision is great - but I'd like something better than human vision if technology can provide that, especially when driving thru heavy snow or fog.
