Diesel locomotives have had diesel electric drive forever because the power output is too large for mechanical transmissions and clutches to handle. Try to imagine the number of gears to go through accelerating a long freight train from standstill to 60 mph/100 kph. The system has excellent torque. However, there are significant energy/heat losses. Mechanically linking the engine to the axles is more efficient plus you don't have to carry around the weight of a generator and electric motors. Yes, a manual transmission weighs something but is light compared to the alternative.
