  1. Get lost. The army was faced with multiple tasks years before it had planned for. The creation of a 43 Division army was a remarkable achievement within a war, with Britain under fire. The First World War certainly got Britain thinking. It left the army determined to avoid another Somme -and this it did.

By which time both Overlood and Dragoon had taken place and Paris was liberated.' You Berk. Overlord was a agreed at Trident in May 1943 within the following year. The Quebec Conference in August 1943 approved 1st May 1944 as D-Day. The only delay to this was due to the need to acquire additional landing craft for Sword and Utah beaches. Any comparison between Overlord and Saipan is absurd. Overlord was years in planning for an assault on a continent - involving 7,000 ships, 6,000 aircraft and 157,000 troops on the first day alone, rising to one million by early July 1944. Two artificial harbours, pipelines under the sea and so on and so on. If you think it was a 20 mile crossing you should get your Geography teacher to show you a map. Considering that this seems to be a documentary about the major commanders and their Ulster connections, how far should the content go in detailing the exploits of each division there? Would a series of documentaries about the three year campaign as whole be a better for that level of information?

'again...because of Falaise, which sent the Germans running. The attrition going on around Caen was unsustainable.' Unstainable for the Germans. " Normandy victory was achieved ahead of schedule" 'because of Falaise....' Because of Montgomery's superb leadership of the allied campaign leading to a bigger defeat for Germany than Stalingrad.

Further, the Mediterranean campaign denied the Germans access to resources from outside of mainland Europe, and victory there freed a million tons of shipping for use in campains around the world. Get it right next time.

"Yes it was utterly avoidable. " If Eisenhower had stuck to what had been agreed before D-Day and pushed allied forces into Germany on a single thrust in the Autumn of 1944, Germany would not have been in a position attack in the Ardennes. Sat there and done nothing! With a bunch of know nothing, glory hungry US Generals marching around in tin helmets, badgering Montgomery to do this or that? I dont think so.

Bastogne...was a walk in the park compared Arnhem. 22,000 against 1German infantry division and 1 tank regiment- with the certainty that help was close at hand.

The Bulge was fronted by the US troops - it was bleeding obvious that they would take the brunt of the fighting. Fighting that was utterly avoidable. As for Arnhem, how does that compare?

Yea, with 72 months of war all over the world, with a war that came two years before Britain could be ready for a conflict - against an enemy at the peak of its powers and with having to cope with the fall of France in a matter of weeks. Contrast this with the USA being 2,500 miles from the nearest danger and not seeing a German soldier until the end of 1942, after the Germans were irretrievably embroiled in Russia. The USA war record is a joke compared to that of Britain and Russia.
