  1. According to the BBC, most of the 'migrants' on this particular boat are from Eritrea and fleeing from military service. A Swiss court recently ruled that Eritrean 'migrants' do NOT qualify for refugee status. EU citizens take note unless you want the entire Eritrean population to settle in your countries.

  2. Eritrea fought a long war against Ethiopia to gain independence yet allowed a dictatorial leader to gain control of the country and impose long military service even in peacetime. If people have enough strength of body and character to cross the Sahara, as you say, they ought to be able to regain control of their own country and make a life in their ancestral homeland instead of leaving for a distant continent. I know about 140 Eritreans who have moved to my town, some well others only by sight. Only a handful can speak English and most are having great difficulty learning our local language. About half are illiterate even in Tigrinya or another Eritrean language. No matter how nice these people are, they are not equipped to join the European workforce. To encourage more to come to Europe serves no one's best interests.
