I bought a smart key for our first 3rd generation Prius from an online remote and key store that had given me great service, but it simply wouldn't program. The dealer said it looked like the key had been used with another car before, and now I know what that means. Fortunately the online store accepted it back.

Car thieves miss those days, too. Hondas were notorious for being easily stolen with a worn down key.

The Car Wizard mentioned that in one of his videos. Draining the oil and finding out the car was ready and just snoozing is no fun, I suppose.

@TheCarCareNut I had no idea. I found https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HS1Zobxwbak - it seems to vary from vehicle to vehicle. Maybe if you look at the chart in the article it will point to a particular generation in the Toyota Smart Keys.

@TheCarCareNut I am certain that is true for the smart key for a 2010 Prius. I bought one on the net and it could not be programmed. If it is not stored in the key the key could be reused on another car.

The Ford system is also famously secure (unlike the GM Passlock that could be overridden and even reprogrammed by leaving the key in the run for at least 10 minutes exactly).
