I recall reading The Satanic Verses just after the fatwa was pronounced, just for the principle of the thing. I barely recall what it was about because the story was so incoherent. My principle is now to only read banned or challenged books if they are well written.

He wants an opportunity to stand on a soap box during his trial. If he pleads guilty, there's no trial and he disappears into a prison.

@twinsouls1473 My principle is to support freedom of the press. I have no desire to insult anyone's religious beliefs, but nobody gets to tell me what I can and can't read. Is your prophet so fragile that he can't withstand a few veiled insults from a mediocre writer?

About 20 years ago I found out he was going to be speaking in the city where I was then a police officer. I informed my lieutenant, who called to ask why we hadn't been told that a guy with a fatwa on his head was coming to town. The venue manager said "He doesn't want any security." He got it anyway. I later read in his memoir Joseph Anton (the code name his protection detail gave him) that he was kept under such close watch that he came to resent the people protecting him. Maybe now he feels differently.
