@Zorglub1966 I think your assumption of pure lead bulletss is actually a rather poor assumption . It was well-known since the early 1900s the printers lead which is ubiquitous everywhere , is sufficiently hard to make bullets suitable for even rifle pressures . Then as now these cast up just fine and I would have no problem dumping a few hundred of them through a gun between cleanings.

@Zorglub1966 believe me. I have done all of those things. This is an area that I have a significant familiarity with . You've cited a lot of things were the the old theories, but which have not held up well to further testing. Chapter 10 of "modern reloading" by Richard Lee does a pretty good job of showing where those explanations fall down. I cast and reload for a variety of calibers.

@Zorglub1966 Lord you're 100% hundred and 80° wrong on that one . It is the pressure not the speed . Lube is tied to velocity, but not the hardness of the bullet.

Yes. And maybe in a couple years, I'll have to take that back. This is an area that has had a lot of the knowledge expanded in the last few years because of economics, better reloading equipment and the advent of polymer jacketing. Also, Lyman still publishes the old theory.
