  1. Chechens are clan people. Kadyrov's clan made a deal with the Russians to put him in power, but the other clans haven't forgotten. What Chechens have always been famous for is never forgiving an offence and showing up with hundreds of relatives at the home of anyone who offends one of them. They were never known as fighters or warriors. They're more like gangsters.

  2.  @bradburke8232  - The whole area is a patchwork of old grudges and hatreds. Countries don't matter as much as tribal loyalties, and they don't match any borders.

  3.  @Radbot776  - I have no idea whether I've met any. Probably. We don't ask here. Chechens' history and reputation under the tsars and Soviets is a matter of record. They've built themselves a whole new mythos in the last generation, but they're still the same tribal mobsters they always have been. Does Kadyrov strike you as a typical twentieth century leader or a medieval warlord?

  7. Russia made them and used them for centuries to terrorize and suppress the peasants. They're the descendants of slavic types who moved south to get away from the expanding empire of the Tsars. They mixed with the people already in the region and became fierce fighters to defend themselves. Then the Tsars hired them as a personal army to keep the peasants in line. Eventually, they became absorbed as part of the empire themselves. That ended with the Soviets and they became a collection of clans who both cooperated and competed with each other. Then Russia blasted them back to the Stone Age, hired Kadyrov, and turned the area into a dictatorship. Russians have always hated Chechens, and Chechens have always hated everyone but their own brand of Chechen.
