A lot of that has been done by hobbyists over the years, and cheap sensors meant for cell phones made a huge difference. People have been building autonomous model planes that can fly themselves to a point, circle, and take video before returning home since the nineties. A guy in New Zealand built a half size autonomous Tomahawk about twenty years ago and had it confiscated by their version of the FBI. It's like the quadcopters. Give the nerds the money and we'll build anything you like.

Not much to strip out of it. Seats and the dashboard. It's just an aluminium pipe frame with skin other than that.

Employed Russians have phones.

Take out the seats, dashboard and 150 kilos of humans. Autopilots for R/C planes have been available since the 90's, and cheap cell phone sensors and processors make it possible to add object recognition, which isn't difficult when it's aiming for the tallest towers on the site. You could literally build one of these using stuff from the hobby store and an industrial motion control company. Servos in this range are off the shelf standard stuff.

The drone factory looked like offices.

@virtualalias - I'm sure a cell phone has the computing power to run something like this. They have GPS, 3D position and movement sensors, memory, and cameras all built in.

@SvdSinner It's off the shelf stuff now. Your computer, phone, radio, and autopilot all figure out how to do things. You just tell it where to go and what to do when it gets there. Flip the prop and it does the rest.
