  3. In my opinion, none of these cities are dead. They are very ill and very sad places to be, but they are not dead. Detroit has 600,000 people, and East St. Louis has about 20,000 people. In my opinion, a dead city and a ghost town are the same thing, and these places are far from being ghost towns. A truly dead city would be Pripyat, in Ukraine. It used to have 49,000 people and today has zero. It died/was evacuated during the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. I don’t know what it would take to revive the cities on Briggs’ video, to make them healthy metropolises again.

  4. I actually like Michigan, but don’t care so much for Detroit. I liked East Lansing and MSU and might still like it today, but if I were to move to Michigan I’d check out Grand Rapids.

  9. Let me clarify my prior comments: I made another comment in this thread that a city cannot be totally dead unless it becomes a ghost town. A place with a population of zero, devoid of any human activity at all. Nobody else seems to agree with that assessment, but I am sticking to it. New York City has not had a population under seven million since the 1940s. It has not been anywhere near being dead in all that time. I’ve been to New York many times, including in the 1970s. I saw the Empire State Building, Central Park, Broadway, Times Square, and I rode the subway and the Long Island Railroad and later MetroNorth. I never saw the Statue of Liberty or the World Trade Center and always wanted to see the latter. And I’ve seen countless traffic jams in New York City. It was a city of many problems but it was never dead. Not even close!
