Why did the Egyptians create mummies and place them in tombs??? Answer: they believed that their body was required for the afterlife + they tried to protect it from destruction/violation. Thus in so much as leaving mummies in the ground will often result in their destruction from the environment and/or things like insects then removing them to a museum where they will be protected and professionally preserved = facilitates what the ancient Egyptians were trying to achieve. p.s. - Tut's mummy actually IS in his tomb by the way. While other mummies have been removed to museums - his tomb being a protected site has his mummy still in it. It is sometimes removed for study = and returned. Also they created a duplicate tomb which is for tourists to visit so that his will not be damaged from the traffic of so many people visiting it.
