You have to renounce at a US Embassy (and it costs money, of course). You can choose not to renew your US passport, but you are still a citizen and technically subject to US global taxation and reporting requirements.

@therock8224 I have multiple passports including US. I used to travel a lot, all over, including those countries that have to issue your visa on a separate piece of paper because your home country says you can't go there (spoiler: you can usually go there). Never experienced this issue. This guy must have been flagged for another reason (including random, that happens) or been really sassy with immigration. Just hand over your US Passport when entering the US, look pleasant but bored, and if you get flagged for search (it happens to all people of all melanin levels and all 56 genders or whatever we have now) just be pleasant. I have had my stuff tossed by other countries, generally US TSA/immigration just runs the bag through an additional magic machine and says "have a nice day". Argentina, they toss your stuff like they are robbing you haha, try that sometime. Repacking all your personal items right there in the terminal.

@trevcam6892 The US permits multiple passports. Always has. Many Americans can become Irish yet so few do, it seems very odd to me.

@georgerivera9220 The US permits multiple passports, as does Israel. In fact about 10% of Israelis are dual nationals. There are many Americans volunteering in the IDF right now. There are members of past and current US governments (including elected officials) who are dual nationals. The list is Israeli-American dual nationals is really, really long and has been so since the founding of Israel (Golda Meir was an American Israeli for instance). Good luck getting the IRS off of your back by just picking up an Israeli passport or joining the IDF. Every Jew in America would do this immediately, LOL. I might even convert myself.
