  2. stevethegecko Not exactly. It refers to a specific pandemic, not the source of the disease. For example, when we think ‘Black Death’ we think more specifically of the waves that swept Asia and Europe in the 1300s to 1600s (as detailed in this video), rather than bubonic/pneumonic plague occurring at any other time. Here, ‘Spanish ‘flu’ refers specifically to the 1918 influenza pandemic. Not the source of zoonosis.

  4. Debbie Moore Mainly because there was a opportunistic (bacterial) pneumonia that went along with it after the influenza damaged the lungs, especially cilia of the airways. But yeah, they had nothing like the non-invasive and invasive respiratory support systems or other organ support equipment (including IV fluids) we have today.
