A couple of things, one the guy at the beginning might be handsome but he's not what most people with serious relationships in mind are looking for, indeed he does not at all seem like someone even looking for something serious in the first place also his personality will be an impediment if it has any crossover with the online persona he has. Two, shy guy's find rejection painful and have doubts about whether someone likes them just as much, not trying is a lot easier than either meanwhile women who are too aggressive come off as not taking things seriously (one issue is that is actually the case with a lot of men who do "well" at dating), ultimately friend groups might be the most important in solving such issues as they can confirm interest without upsetting the status quo, that said friends often don't want to involve themselves incase things don't turn out well so as to not be responsible for starting a failed relationship or having to take sides in the fallout. The fact that such conversations are even contemplated however is a very good sign, one that many western nations markedly lack.
