The first engagement of American troops in WW1 was at the battle of Hamel on July 4th 1918. The first MoH of WW1 was awarded to Thomas A Pope who fought under the command of the Australian general Sir John Monash. The first time American troops had fought under a foreign general since the Revolutionary War. A proud day for both our countries.
