Generally, all drugs, including alcohol, are a crutch for an underlying mental illness already present, such as depression or an anxiety disorder, etc., from a bad life, divorce, lost job, or PTSD. This is where the slippery slope actually applies, as one might start with a weaker drug or alcohol, but when that doesn't work well anymore, over tolerance, they progress to something stronger to relieve their symptoms and pain (to forget or calm down). Sadly, this happens a lot.
