The CIA uses the wizard image on their project patches, especially those about spying. In truth, "wizard" originates from "wise man," and they were the early physicians and apothecarians, as well as the blacksmiths.
The witch hunts in England were over a group of wise people in the northeast who treated the sick with herbs, and weren't Christians. Their daughter thought she cursed a peddler with apoplexy, and named her entire family over feeling guilty. Since they weren't Christians, the claim was made that they were heretics that sold their souls to "Auld Horny," and they were tried over what was written in the Witches Hammer, which had just been brought to England from the mainland. The persecution went on for several years, until a Puritan vicar stepped in to stop it. The "witch hunter" was a fraud. However, it continued elsewhere on the island, and was much worse, in Scotland.
