That is the big difference between the two parties. The DNC selects who they want, regardless of the primary vote, while the Rs follow the vote. The first is "undemocratic," and the second is democratic. The Ds, going back to Boss Tweed, have been guilty of this for a very long time. Saying this, the D Party, especially after 1945, had to do this to keep out the radicals that have been with them since the Democrat Clubs, (consisting of the French and Germans), which formed under Washington. The Ds, though, have been socialists from day one. It's one of the reasons why the Rs left the D-R Party by 1829, and it's the biggest one. Jefferson's political ideology never did fully mesh with that of Madison and Monroe, as the latter two were close with the French radicals.
.
What I have been told of the R Party, is that they control the top membership, to keep out the radicals, before they can throw their hat in the ring. NGOs, such as the Hudson Institute, which recommends R policy, comes into play here. The institute's roots go back to Ike and "two agencies," but they also supported three "progressive" candidates (Nixon, and both Bushes), which has led us down a dark globalist road with wars and China. However, the R Party still adheres to the primary vote.
.
Trump, who, at one time, called himself a D, also became a reformer, and ran in 1999-2000 under Perot's Reform Party, which he quickly left, and outed. He ran as a reformer, again, but this time as an R, and he has kept his word. He left the D Party over the same reason as Reagan.
