The 1952 election was the end of the old GOP, when Dewey, a progressive, asked Ike, an independent, to run against Robert A Taft, who was the last real conservative and Republican, and was the front runner. Ike barely won the primary. We've had neoliberals and neocons since that time, as progressivism was forced upon the public. As far as I know, there have been only two sitting presidents to fight against this "progress."
