  1. That was what Thomas Jefferson wanted at first, but was fought tooth and nail by the Federalists. Those are the same Federalists that started adopting proto-socialist and socialist ideology because the ideology supported a big-brother government that would micromanage everything. It was also being preached to them from within several Christian religious sects, which was known as the "social gospel."
