No, advocating California independence is not a crime. But nobody takes it seriously because it is nearly impossible to realise with the might of the US military. Hong Kong is a different situation--sure, I don't like that certain words become taboo in public and nobody likes new restrictions, but these independence advocates will stoop to harming China by advocating sanctions against their own country. Flip this around, and "California Independence" advocates asking China to scuttle US trade deals will find the FBI at their doorstep REAL QUICK.

@Josdamale The cops have to build some nuance into their actions. You can't blanket arrest everybody, first of all you don't have enough cops, and second you don't want to terrorise the public. Only grab the most prominent lawbreakers to set an example, and these are also the ones you have the best evidence to prosecute.

Those who dismiss HK were never going to visit anyway. Those who care about HK will continue their relationship with the city.

@Josdamale Well, at least you realise what is going on. The rioters keep telling themselves that the "free world" cares about them and they make up fantastic stories about police brutality to beg for help. They've attempted to attach their cause onto geopolitical conflicts that are bigger than just Hong Kong. The funniest thing is that Britain is planning a fast-track residency program for BN(O) holders, but those born after the handover (i.e. the vast majority of the student rioters) don't qualify for a BN(O).

@Josdamale Anyone born before the handover on 1 July 1997 can apply for a BN(O). Basically, if you are 23 or younger in Hong Kong, you will never qualify for this passport.
