One thing both Yorktown's and Hornet's sinkings have in common. Is that damage control almost salvaged the ship but the IJN shows up at the last minute and everything becomes irrecoverable.

You can still burn the ashes

@claymontgomery4616 that and Enterprise surviving the damage it suffered during the war.
46
@sealpiercing8476 actually power was almost restored when the Kates from Zuikaku and Jun,yo showed up.
46
That's not ominous.
40
@artificernathaniel3287 there are a couple of Azur Lane and Kantai Collection fanfics where the destroyers are either bribed into doing stuff for ice cream. Or go on a riot because someone interfered with the supply.

All those battles had at least one Yorktown-Class present. Coral Sea-Yorktown Midway-Yorktown, Enterprise and Hornet Eastern Solomons-Enterprise Santa Cruz-Enterprise and Hornet. Philippine Sea-Enterprise Cape Engano-Enterprise.
13
@SonOfAB_tch2ndClass I was waiting for the Azur Lane comments to pop up
12
@LaraineBouguer it helped that Enterprise had a Battleship to serve as an escort and a distraction for the IJN pilots
12
@claymontgomery4616 Also all of those weaknesses can be traced back to the Washington Naval Treaty.
9
@demonprinces17 again had the final wave of Torpedo Bombers never showed up (or were all shot up). The damage control crews nearly had the power back on.
9
Saratoga: Am I a Joke to you?
8
@melwinge9154 Wasp was sunk by I-19 a few weeks earlier.
4
Local Carrier too angry to die.
4
To quote Azur Lane. ‘OWARI DA!’
3
Next battle. Owari Da!
3
@Peterax788 it was a mixture of Avengers, Dauntlesses and B-17s if I remember correctly. Also to quote Drach in his 5 minute guide to Enterprise. ‘I wonder how the Captains of those ships felt. Knowing that they’re ships had been sunk by effectively a cripple.’
3
More than likely. Those reports were either a) not written because the Japanese also did a lot of intra service lying on top of inter service lying b) destroyed at the end of the war.
3
The problem is that the Japanese may have torched all their records at the end of World War 2.
3
Also Laffey’s last stand and a very vengeful Enterprise
2
All that was missing was Warspite.
2
@Peterax788 and escorting Saratoga (she was back at the same time) and Enterprise.
2
Honestly if she was present. Then it would mean one battleship per carrier group. Which may have possibly saved Hornet.
2
@Peterax788 November 17 1942.
2
And the Japanese aircraft for the most part were still shredded.
2
Speaking of which. Air Group 10 was deployed on Enterprise not just in this battle. But the Battle of the Philippine Sea.
1
@melwinge9154 you mean in 1942. Kinda creepy when you think about it. The two big battles involving just the Yorktowns end with either one of them sinking and Enterprise surviving.
1
@petersouthernboy6327 he was also present at Santa Cruz. Flying Wildcats off of Enterprise and scoring 7 kills.

Battle 360

The best way to describe what happens to Enterprise onward is this. “ You took my sisters. So I’ll take your navy.
1
It’s kinda tragic when you realise it. That in-spite of their flaws. Yorktown and Hornet had taken a lot of damage that should have put them under. But survived long enough for damage control. To make significant progress on restoring the ship. Only for the IJN to show up at the last moment to finally sink them. Speaking of which, I’ve been working on an Alternate History scenario for the two surviving the war.
1
She learned that from her elder sister Yorktown
1
@hariman7727 “screw you I’ll take 501.”
1
Someone did an Azur Lane version of it.
1
@champagnegascogne9755 that one.
1
No she was disabled by I-19 in the same attack that sunk USS Wasp (CV-7)
