I think we need the opposite of a skilled worker visa and a path to citizenship for those illegal immigrants who do the jobs that US citizens will not do. This is primarily done as farm work, but I will assume there are other occupations that I am ignorant of that are also filled by illegal immigrants when legal citizen workers cannot be found. I think there should be some type of visa and path to citizenship through this type of work, perhaps a 4 or 5 year requirement of this work kind of like a typical military service contract (another path that I support to citizenship). In addition, due to the low pay of these types of jobs, the Visa should be significantly cheaper to purchase and perhaps subsidized by taxpayer money. The citizens of this country have a vested interest in what these immigrants do to help the country and this type of work is NOT displacing American citizens from employment (in fact some American citizens have employment that is dependent on the work of these immigrants). There is so much talk about illegal immigration, and not enough talk about what can be done to improve the situation through legal channels that are not detrimental to the welfare of American citizens.

Some of them are needed in low wage farm work that no American citizens will do. I think there should be a path to citizenship for those who perform these necessary but unrewarded roles. I just wish there was some type of subsidized visa for those who choose to do this type of work.

@jacobwrona You realize that minimum wage laws specifically exclude farm work right? How many tomatoes would you purchase at 12.99/lb? That is what would happen to prices if people were paid reasonable wages. Robots aren't very good at picking soft fruits and vegetables very well, so low skilled and low paid labor is used, it is almost exclusively made up of immigrants (both legal and illegal).
