Chiral symmetry is where you get the terms trans and cis. Those terms were co-opted from chemistry.

@scs5067 R and L is that what you meant, almost like there is some type of omega carbon naming convention. Check out what chirality means in higher dimensions, you might find some convergence in these ideas. I can see why at a glance they wouldn't seem to be the same thing, but once you start looking at the different kinds of symmetries, you will see that these two things are the same thing as seen from a different angle. Anyhow a cis chemical can be either right or left handed but the "cis" version was either discovered first or is more predominant. The trans version is a mirror opposite. The left or right handedness matches the chirality. Chirality goes far beyond the corkscrew shape that most people are familiar with, and fields have chirality as well. The R and L isomers are chiral in nature.
