@oolong2 Yes, some individuals can't make these choices because they don't prioritize health over eating something unhealthy. We do have to take some level of responsibility. At the same businesses hire all sorts of scientists, researchers, nutritionists, health experts that are involved in creating our food, which do this because they want to appeal to people's desires of fast food, healthy food, organic food, cheap food, knock-offs, etc. Freedom gives us more choices.

@oolong2 The "opportunity and jobs" were only available because there were little or no government controls to make a wage or start a business. They came here for a variety of reasons, either because there was freedom, or because of the BENEFITS of freedom which were abundant jobs and ways to make a living. America was very unique by not having an income tax for over 150 years and that was a big incentive for businesses to grow. Now there are few incentives to do business here versus Asia.

@oolong2 When I say we don't have private roads, I meant to say the majority of roads are not private. There are certainly some private roads, and even travel systems at malls, businesses, large plots of land, etc. Yes, toll roads too. In a free market, which we do not have, I bet you could pay for roads with billboard sponsorship, and not stop, just like we get with free or near free television. But it's not for me to decide. The best ideas would come to the top. I'd hate checkpoints too.

@oolong2 Freedom is a pretty clear but concept. It's either you have the freedom to make decisions about your life as an individual, as long as you do not use force or fraud, OR the government makes decisions for you. And usually the government is influenced by very powerful special interests... Interests that don't help the common person like me. Yes, industries benefited from war, which I would be opposed to. The real wealth had been accumulated prior to WWI and WWII.

@oolong2 I'd like 1776 freedom and opportunity with 21st century technology. Slavery was all over the world, in tyrannical countries too. But it didn't last long in a free society, versus other countries that had it for several hundred years. A non-aggression, peace philosophy is anti-slavery in all forms.

@oolong2 I'd also add that free markets are not mythical. They happen every time you choose to eat something, or watch a movie, or buy shoes, or get a hair cut. The markets are all around us at all times. True free markets haven't existed for over 100 years. It's been slowly eroding for years. I think Ben Frankln said it's the nature of government to gain and liberty to yield so it's no surprise we have out of control debt and bigger government and fascist corporate power than ever.

But didn't Obama SIGN the legislation from Republicans to "cut" the FSIS to fund the FDA? A Democrat Senate passed it too! So both are to blame for "cuts". Obama chose to cut FSIS to fund the FDA from $2.1 billion in spending in 2008 to $4 billion in 2011. It's all available on the FDA dot gov site. So the government of BOTH PARTIES are screwing things up. Technology, science, private inspection, competition and capital make our food more safe, not bureaucrats making decisions from DC.

@eirefrance I've heard all about how the past was terrible. However, you need to compare countries that had freedom to countries that did not have freedom. Millions of people FLOCKED to America just to be able to EAT. They didn't even have "meat shops" in their tyrannical countries or even the capital to have government check the food. When countries get poorer they also neglect safety. It's capital and wealth that allows for better food safety, not trickle-down government.

@oolong2 Let me correct you slightly... do fascist forces corrupt regulations? Yes. We agree. However, true capitalism wouldn't allow corporations to corrupt the regulations. "Reasonable" regulations are up to a bureaucrat versus the market. It may be UNreasonable to ban a certain toxin over another, but I would rather have millions of individuals decide, and health safety experts in the private sector decide versus a handful of bureaucrats. @oolong2 High fructose corn syrup is a toxin that I mentioned. Toxins like refined flour, Omega-6 seed oils, corn, processed soy (soy milk, soy protein, soy flour, etc.) are all toxic but in small doses are fine. But yes, if consumed in the long term there are health concerns. This is a part of education because we can't eliminate these foods. This should be taught in school. In general, businesses do not want to sell insects in beef. Would you do this with your business? Really?

@oolong2 I agree that the general public will not be educated on foods. However, most foods have toxins. Even if you shop for organic there are toxins. So how would you solve it? You can't ban toxins. You are totally that businesses allow a certain level of lower grade products to enter the market place. Even with modern regulations, there is bacteria in meat, puss in milk, feces in vegetables, etc. The solution is to cook meat thoroughly, buy graded milk, wash vegetables, and much more.

@oolong2 As far as toxic food, there must be an understanding from each person what is healthy or unhealthy, because the government can't eliminate unhealthy food. It's impossible to ban fatty foods, cigarettes... just look at the drug war. Can they curb it? Possibly. But you will still have obese people eating fast food, fried foods at home, high fructose corn syrup that will make them die far sooner if they had a healthier diet. It comes down to education, choices, and will power.

@oolong2 Safety doesn't need to come from the federal level. I'd prefer a variety of standards set by local governments, communities, local businesses, different packaging, competitive safety standards, the Internet, stores, etc. that accommodates the community best at various prices. Many high cost regulations do make the poor poorer, which is why regulation should vary. And when government gives big fines, it diverts businesses to buy safety products, cattle vaccines or cleaner facilities.

@mrx0066600 Try opening up your own grocery store and serve unsafe food and you'll quickly get a bad reputation and will eventually have no business, no customers, no profits. This happens all of the time even with the FSIS and other laws.

@oolong2 The United States was a free country and that's why people came with no money in their pockets. That's because tyrannical governments destroyed their countries in various ways. And that's what will eventually happen here. In 2005 I predicted the current events with gold, the markets, credit downgrades, etc. This is the nature of government interference. People leave their countries to find prosperity which is generally found in free or Democratic countries.

@eirefrance First, Capitalism is not Corporatism. True Capitalism only happens when there are no favors or special tax breaks for corporations, no bailouts, no regulations that favor corporations, etc. There are many kinds of capital too like physical, natural, social human, and cultural capital. In a nutshell, if we are free to acquire capital, we trade, save, invent, produce we create capital which in turns helps us trade, save invent, produce all for greater prosperity. Then repeat & grow.

@oolong2 Slavery was an institution of force, which was established in many tyrannical countries all over the world. It's absolutely anti-freedom and anti-individualistic. So in a true free society, slaves would have never been purchased, owned, etc.

@oolong2 If the government owns the roads, which they do, then they have to have their own set of laws to enforce safety on the roads. If the roads were owned privately, which they will never be, they would require private security and "rules" instead of laws. Then if there are accidents the government would be involved in restitution to those who were harmed and charge those who were guilty.

@oolong2 Pure free markets don't exist, but freer markets do exist. North Korea is less free market than South Korea. Singapore is more free market than China. America was more free market in the 1800's versus today. So there are different levels of free markets versus controlled fascist/socialist government controlling resources. They are not mythical. There are clear differences in levels of freedom. It's like saying civil liberties are mythical. They are not.
