I have never eaten dog. The issue is the Yunlin dog festival is that dogs are skinned alive then boiled alive, because the physiological effect of the stressed, tortured animal changes the taste of the meat. It's definitely horrible, inhumane stuff and we should call it out. But if even the cutest dog is raised then slaughtered in humane conditions, then it's not at all different to eating the less cute, similarly intelligent animals like pigs/pork.

2:08 The English word "chow" (meaning food) appears to come from pidgin English "chow chow" in the 1700s. It looks like it may be related from the Chinese food "a Chinese preserve of ginger, orange peel, and other ingredients, in syrup" and "a mixed vegetable pickle". The dog breed Chow Chow ("a dog of a sturdy Chinese breed with a broad muzzle, a tail curled over the back, a bluish-black tongue, and typically a dense thick coat") is only a very happy coincidence, as best I can tell.

@PureVikingPowers It might be changing because urban youth in China see dogs as pets. There is still a long way to go, but it's a start. As long as animals are bred, butchered and eaten in humane and sanitary conditions a lot of criticism would be much reduced. I wonder how much Hong Kong contributes to the endangered animals trade for traditional Chinese medicine compared to China?
