Repealing the California gold rush-era Chinese Exclusion Act in 1943 was a good start, but by many accounts the US immigration system today continues to be very broken in other ways and it's important we try to understand how to try and make the next hundred years better. Many people in United States (including elected representatives) often suggest the US should move to a "points-based" immigration system like Canada and Australia, where clearly defined criteria (including English language skills, educational attainment, age and strategic national priority skillsets) which supposedly provides a very fair and transparent way for the government to specify exactly the kinds of immigrants who should be given a pathway citizenship (without any consideration of national origin). I'm not necessarily advocating for (or against) the United States to adopt points-based immigration system, just pointing out there's a lot of support for the idea.
