  1.  @Dean4511  In military sense - yes, the comparison is correct. But, politically, Ukraine suffered a lot from Moscow rulers. In the 20th century alone Ukraine lost from 15 to 20 million people because of (1) Bolshevik revolution; (2) consequent civil war; (3) collectivization (Holodomor); (4) terror in 1937; (5) terror in 1939; (6) the WW2. Ukraine wants to have guarantees that such atrocities would never happen again. Russia, on the contrary, did not officially condemn Lenin's and Stalin's crimes against Ukraine; and now officially presents itself as a legal descendant from the whole USSR (which is wrong).

  3. The essence of the conflict is: (a) Ukraine wants to join NATO; (b) Russia doesn't want that. Why Ukraine wants to join NATO: because it cannot stand against a potential further aggression from Russia without a support from nuclear powers. Why Russia doesn't want Ukraine to join NATO: well, for example because the distance between Kharkov (a regional center in the east of Ukraine) and Moscow is about 600 km only.
