It seems apparent that Prigozhin has something to prove to Putin in Bahkmut. What puzzles me is that the Wagner group's inability to take the city after 4 months would surely mean he has completely failed in this regard? The Wagner performance in Bakhmut has been abysmal and totally incompetent. They have performed worse than the Russia regular army and in any other military their performance would be looked upon very poorly indeed. Even now they are complaining about ammo shortages making further progress impossible, meaning they even squandered all their resources on their inept tactics and still achieved almost nothing. Yeah that's some great work there, Prigozhin, demonstrating to the world just how incompetent you are. So to me, the situation would suggest the Wagners are total failures, and certainly worthy of ridicule. As a private army, they completely suck. Even if they take the city tomorrow it has to rate as a massive fail. Who knew that thugs and prisoners would make such poor soldiers? (Hint: everyone). Footnote: I do not want to detract from the bravery and heroism from those defending the city, they totally rock, no question. But to move forward only 400m in 4 months, or whatever it was, is truly pathetic. If Prigozhin did have something to prove to his "master" then surely he has failed miserably?

The Dnipro south bank is 300km long in that area, so they Ukraine can cross it by boat pretty easily, as Russia cannot defend all of it, especially since they seem to have been dumb enough to move a huge volume of troops away from there heading east. In addition, Ukrainian artillery is apparently targeting the river's south bank, and can gather wherever the Ukrainians want to cross. Maps suggest there is only one proper road on that entire west peninsula south of the river, and it runs along the entire south river bank to the tip, so Russia cannot move troops or supplies into this area to defend against beach landings, without them being rained on by the Ukrainian artillery on the north bank. The means Ukraine can freely land on the west tip of the peninsula and set up a major beachhead. They are already doing this I believe. Only the Black Sea fleet could prevent this and if they leave port, they will be destroyed, and they know it. This is a genius maneuver basically.

@johnwhitehurst474 Agreed and I would like to further elaborate. Bakhmut was a trap, designed by Ukraine, to lure russia into attacking a strategically unimportant city that was none-the-less very heavily fortified, and thus to lure them into the most efficient killing zone Ukraine had available in the region. It still serves its purpose months later, as designed. Here's how this trap was achieved....
After Lyman and all those other regions in the NE were liberated last Autumn, Bakhmut ceased being the key defensive city in that area that it previously had been. Look at the map and you can see what I mean, as the front line changed very significantly last autumn, in Ukraine's favour. That front line shift made Bakhmut strategically far less significant. Now, at exactly the same time that the heavily-fortified Bakhmut suddenly ceased to be so important, note that Zelenskyy went on public TV and said the very opposite. He was heavily criticized for drawing attention to the city like that at the time, especially by military analysts who could see that Bakhmut had lost its significance, and argued that Zelenskyy's words would draw unwarranted attention on Bakhmut from russia. Of course it's now become apparent that is exactly what Zelenskyy's hoped to achieve in making this apparently reckless statement. Bakhmut was the most fortified city in the area after all, and they couldn't let all those juicy lines of defence go to waste. So... Trap sprung! Massive amount of dead russians.
It's still delivering results months later. I mean, have people never stopped to think how weird it was that russia chose to focus on Bakhmut, the most heavily fortified city in the entire eastern front (and hence by far the hardest to take), when they could have chosen literally anywhere else? They were lured into it and are too stupid to realise. It is really that simple.
