  2. They were only "assurances", but it seems pretty clear that America had control of the EU gas supply (judging by their "strong objections" to alternative pipelines).

It wasn't a guarantee it was an assurance and they were actually Russian owned nukes, but what happened was: America moved in and took control of the pipeline with the EU gas supply and also Ukrainian agriculture; this was viewed as economic interference by Russia, so they joined the Eastern "breakaway" regions in the eight year civil war and have since trashed the neocon's "investment" and their rebuilding contract is likely worthless, too.
